Saharanpur Junction is one of the major broad gauge junctions of Northern Railway from the point of view of rail traffic and all mail, express and passenger trains stop here. Not only this, there is also a huge depot of diesel at Saharanpur station, so the fuel for diesel engines passing through here is supplied from Saharanpur Junction. Saharanpur Junction has been considered an important place in India since the time of the introduction of rail traffic. Frontier Mail on the Mumbai to Peshawar (now Pakistan) rail route first started from Colaba station in Mumbai on 1st September 1928 and went via Saharanpur Junction. This means that from Mumbai to Delhi 1393 km and Delhi to Peshawar 2335 km, in total 3728 km! There was a time when Frontier Mail was rated as the fastest and most popular train in the British Empire. After the partition of India, this train goes only till Amritsar.
Another very important train route is Amritsar – Howrah route and all trains on this route stop at Saharanpur Junction. Naturally there are trains available from Saharanpur to Dehradun, Howrah (Calcutta), Amritsar, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Kerala, Chandigarh, Jammu, Ajmer, Puri etc. Some of these are available from Saharanpur Junction and some from Tapri Junction.
saharanpur junction time table
Some major trains that pass through Saharanpur Junction can be seen here –
Tapri Junction (TPZ Jn.)
Apart from Saharanpur Junction there is also Tapri Junction whose importance has increased over the years. The reason is that after making Dehradun the capital of Uttarakhand, some new long distance superfast trains have started going through Delhi. These trains had to stop at Laksar and Saharanpur Junction for a minimum of 20 minutes so that the engine could be removed from the front and attached to the last coach to divert the train in the opposite direction.
The distance from Saharanpur Junction to Tapri Junction is 6.4 kms or 4 miles. To go from Saharanpur city to Tapri Junction, tempos are available from Ghantaghar, Hospital Square, Vishwakarma Chowk etc. At night it is possible that the tempo will charge you fare for both the sides saying that you have to come back empty, no ride is available. If you sit in a tempo as a share taxi, it charges only Rs 10 per ride from Tapri to Vishwakarma Chowk. If you take the whole tempo, then from Rs 100 to Rs 150, wherever the deal goes!
If you are coming from Delhi to Saharanpur and your train is going to travel from Tapri to Dehradun / Roorkee, then you have the option of tempo to come from Tapri to Saharanpur city. They are also said to bring a scooter, motorcycle or car and take them away. Some decent people can even give you a lift. It is possible that, fortunately for you, a passenger train can also be found standing at Tapri station which is going towards Saharanpur.

The time table of trains arriving/departing from Tapri station is available here .
Loop line in Saharanpur so that train coming from Roorkee can go towards Deoband without reaching Saharanpur Junction.
One such loop line is also on the outer side of Laksar Junction.
The solution to this problem was found by the railways that one loop line was built near the outer of Laksar Junction and the other near the outer of Saharanpur Junction. Now some trains going from Dehradun/Haridwar via Delhi reach Roorkee without reaching Laksar Junction and leave for Delhi via Tapri Junction without reaching Saharanpur Junction. To facilitate the use of these trains to the residents of Saharanpur, a minor station like Tapri has been upgraded, platform has been made and an overbridge has been made. Not only this, all the trains going from Dehradun to Delhi have also been given halt here. So the Saharanpur residents who have to go to Jaipur, Ajmer, Somnath, Dwarka, Okha, Puri, Utkal etc., make their reservation from these trains from Tapri Junction instead of Saharanpur Junction and catch these trains from there. In reality !
Saharanpur – Shahdara Rail Line
Tapri Junction has another use too. The broad gauge railway line from Saharanpur to Shahdara also starts from Tapri and ends at Shahdara (Delhi) via Rampur Maniharan, Shamli, Baraut, Baghpat, Loni. Some trains going from Saharanpur to Delhi go to Delhi via Deoband, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Ghaziabad and some go to Delhi via Shamli, Baraut. If you are going to go beyond Delhi or even Delhi then it does not matter whether the train will go via Shamli or Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Ghaziabad. But if you have to catch a train or get down from somewhere in the middle of Saharanpur – Delhi, then you must see which is the route of your train.
Roorkee Deoband proposed rail line
Roorkee to Muzaffar Nagar is 42 km, with the aim of reducing it to 27 km, work is going on on the Roorkee – Deoband rail route. The Prime Minister himself is reviewing the progress of this Rs 400 crore project every month. In our country any such project is first entangled on the issue of land acquisition and there is delay in it and the budget also keeps increasing.
